Day 2

Day 2

Genesis 12: 1-3

Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

What if?

This is a familiar story from the Hebrew Bible, Abraham’s call and the start of the Jewish nation. There were a lot of “what ifs”; what if this new God was no better than the rest?  What if Abraham went the wrong way, got side-tracked or gave up because it all got too much? Interestingly, God never promises Abraham that he will go with him – he has to make do with his nephew Lot, and his goods and chattels. Underpinning this amazing call is a promise, a promise of blessing, prosperity and the chance to be part of God’s Big Plan, not only for Abraham and his family, but for everybody, and indeed the whole of creation. That’s a pretty big carrot.

As we start out on our Advent journey, we may have a lot of “what ifs” in our lives. God’s invitation to be part of His story still stands, but the big difference is we now know that He is with us. This is the reason for our celebration, Immanuel, God with us.
